FAQ: Curiosity Has Questions

These are the questions readers send us most often. If yours isn't here, share it with us.

Do I need to follow trends to enjoy visual culture?

No. We treat trends as a map of what people are noticing, not a shopping list. Take one idea, adapt it and leave the rest.

Where do current visual trends usually come from?

Most remix earlier movements — Memphis design, 1970s colour photography, Japanese mending traditions — mixed with what is easy to make or buy now.

How do I find my own style instead of copying?

Repeat one small experiment over a week and compare the results. Patterns in what you keep choosing reveal your taste.

02 /Practical things

Can I take good photographs with just a phone?

Yes. Light direction, patience and composition matter far more than equipment. Most of our exercises are designed for phones.

What is the best time of day for natural-light photography?

The hour after sunrise and before sunset gives warm, low light, but open shade and side window light work well all day. Midday sun suits bold, graphic shadows.

How can I change my interior if I rent?

Focus on lamps, textiles, rugs, plants and arrangement. These change a room dramatically and move with you.

Is it okay to photograph street art and murals?

Generally yes for personal use, but credit the artist, respect residents and businesses, and check local rules before any commercial use.

Which creative hobby is easiest to start?

An eight-page zine needs only paper and a pen. Sashiko mending and air-dry clay are close behind and cost very little.
